Basketball Victoria is the custodian for wheelchair basketball in Victoria and sees this program as a natural extension of our inclusion philosophy by developing and supporting people with impairment.
We’ve developed numerous entry levels, strategies and clear, integrated pathways that engage and develop players, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers across the wheelchair basketball system.
Opportunities are available for all people to engage with this part of our sport particularly those with:
- childhood-onset physical disabilities
- spinal cord injury (SCI)
- secondary physical disabilities
- physical impairment that is not traditionally seen as ‘disabled’
(e.g. chronic conditions that prevent people from participating
in their chosen sport).
Intellectual Disability Program
Basketball Victoria provides many participatory opportunities for people with an intellectual disability, through playing, coaching, officiating, volunteering and administrative support.
Extensive collaboration with the specialist school system over a number of years has strengthened the participation pathway creating greater opportunities for students with an intellectual disability.
Available programs, including those directly at association level, all contribute to individual self-development and achievement. They also help to create healthier and more active and confident people through social connectivity with other basketballers, including those in the mainstream system.
